Have you heard of Earth Overshoot Day? This is the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources in a given year exceeds what our planet can regenerate in that year. It starts by measuring the ecological footprint of the whole of the planet’s population, and averaging it out. Globally, 30th July is the date that we will mark Earth Overshoot Day, determined by calculating the number of days of that year that Earth’s biocapacity can provide for humanity’s ecological footprint. The remainder of the year corresponds to global overshoot. This graphic shows when each country in the world hits their own national overshoot – Ireland’s was on 14th April.
