“When Jesus saw the crowd, he felt sorry for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd”

Many years ago, I was in Brazil and living in a very rural parish surrounded by sheep paths and mountainous terrain with a gurgling stream meandering around its base. The sun was high in the sky, yet there was a soft breeze blowing. It was beautiful to behold, and I was at peace with myself and this wonderful world. There was a deep silence punctured only by the singing of the birds and the hum of the insects.

Suddenly there was the unique sound in the distance of sheep baaing, and suddenly there appeared, their friend and carer, I will never forget that scene as long as I live. He drove them before him into a field and closed the gate carefully so that not one of his precious flock would get lost again.

The shepherd then began to whistle once more, and suddenly a tiny head and two small feet of a baby lamb, appeared over the hill. The tune of the shepherd changed, his whistle was louder than before, and the tiny animal reacted to the sound of his master and raced down the hill towards him. The good shepherd, his master and saviour, at once picked up the frightened lamb and cuddled him in his arms. The lamb was safe and at peace in the arms of his beloved master.

It was a very spiritual experience for me, and the Psalm 99 somehow took on a different meaning than I could have ever imagined. I began to pray it, instead of just thinking about it. It was by pondering on every line and its significance for me personally that that psalm has made such a deep impression on me.

Yes!

“The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.

Fresh and green are the pastures where He gives me repose.

Near restful waters He leads me to revive my drooping spirit.”

En verdes praderas me hace descansar;

junto a aguas tranquilas me conduce para restaurar mi alma”.
