Primera lectura

First reading
Reading from the prophet Isaiah 50, 5-9a
This first reading speaks to us about the prophet Isaiah, who had to intervene and advise on international political issues in his time. That is why I want to take this verse: The Lord opened his ear to me; I did not resist or shrink back. Isaiah heard the call, to speak and intercede before God for the people. He trusted God when he went through difficult times and did not back down. Today each person is called from the places where they are to work in synodality to build another possible world.
Psalm
Ps. 114, 1-2. 3-4. 5-6. 8-9 R. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.
Describes the deliverance of the people of Israel from the bondage of Egypt. It recounts in an extraordinary way the power and goodness of God during the crucial moments of Israel’s history. It is the story of the exodus of so many migrants of yesterday and today who go in search of a more dignified life.
A reading from the letter of the Apostle James 2, 14-18
Faith and works are not enemies, but always go together. Both are part of God’s grace in our lives and never contradict each other in every Christian. For faith is always being perfected by works…
Reading of the Holy Gospel according to Mark 8, 27-35
To reflect on the different biblical texts, take the most significant verses together with images that can help you to meditate.
Jesus’ question, What do people say that I am?
It is an invitation to complete and purify the concept that was not yet well understood about the person of Jesus by the people who followed him. And it is also a question for us today: Who is Jesus for me? Can I see Jesus in the other?
Mk. 8. 31-35 This part of the text describes the painful journey that Jesus has to make. Here there are instructions addressed especially to the disciples, where he explains to them what the demands of following him imply.
What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?
It is a question that challenges us ….. Because if we contemplate the world reality through the news and if we go out there in the neighbourhood, in the streets, we perceive the injustices, the lack of equity, of a few who have too much and of so many of our brothers and sisters who have nothing. Jesus challenges us and invites us to project our life in terms of donation, not possession, a life of self-giving and solidarity, giving coherent witness as people of faith.
