The Body of Christ

Padraigín McKenna, OP

This Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ is a wonderful Feast, and is one which is celebrated throughout the world with great love, devotion and respect. Every time I participate in the Mass and receive Communion – I receive the Body and Blood of Christ –

He lives in me and I live in Him. What a tremendous gift it is to receive Christ within us!

But we must also remember that with these gifts there also comes a responsibility to use them – to live as Jesus did when “He went from place to place doing good.”

It is interesting to note, that the first thing that Jesus did before introducing the gift of the Eucharist to the people and its significance in their lives, was to welcome them warmly and talk to them about the Kingdom of God.

Thinking of our own experience of ‘Church’ can we honestly say that we are a welcoming Community? How can we ensure that our church is ready and open to receive everyone regardless of faith, colour, religion or status of life? How can we encourage others to be more involved?

Send the people away:  Sometimes, like the Apostles, we too become disillusioned because of lack of money or resources or personnel. We get disheartened and get tired, give up in despair, and convince ourselves that what we were hoping to do would be impossible to achieve because of lack of funds, or a scarcity of volunteers willing to become involved because of the immensity of the task envisioned.  There does not seem to be any sense in even attempting to try to do something to alleviate the situation so, we do nothing.

You yourselves give them something to eat.

But Jesus said to them, without flinching, that they had within themselves the power to overcome these said difficulties. He himself commanded them to give the people something to eat and trusted that they would listen to his words. The apostles trusted Jesus and took him at his word.  They did as He proposed, and we know there was sufficient food for everyone present, and there was even some left over.

The Communities with whom I worked in Brazil had a lovely custom, and it fulfilled the mandate of the aforesaid recommendation. Before the Mass started, everyone in the community brought something to eat, however small, and all was laid out on a huge table. After the Mass, there was a veritable feast in which everyone participated.

They filled twelve baskets. No one was left hungry and in response to the final request of Jesus, anything which was left over was donated in love to the poorer and more destitute families in the Community.

The Feast of Corpus Christi is a wonderful God-given gift. Do I really appreciate it as I should? Is my faith in Jesus, in his presence and through his words strong enough that, like Saint Paul I can say with faith and thanks on this Feastday:

“YES, I LIVE, NOW NOT I, BUT CHRIST LIVES IN ME” …

and live accordingly

Corpus Christi
