Feast of the Ascension

Cora McCullagh, OP
The Ascension took place forty days after the
Resurrection: the same period of time that Jesus spent in the dessert preparing for his mission. All the accounts of the Ascension agree that this event took place on a mountain top, Mount Sinai. Perhaps the choice of site is an indication of effort and struggle.
It is suggested that Jesus brought all the Apostles and Disciples up the mountain; this means that he was accompanied by about 120 people! It was probably a rowdy, noisy, worried excited group! Since the apostles were unsure about what was happening, there were lots of questions and comments.
In answer to all the questions, Jesus said: “You see how it was written that the Christ would suffer and die and on the third day would rise from the dead…..Now I am sending down to you what the father has promised. Stay in the city then, until you are clothed with the power from on high…”
Suddenly, as the crowd watched, Jesus was enveloped in a cloud and disappeared. One can imagine their amazement as he vanished from their sight! sadness, fear, terror, loss, bewilderment. “As he blessed them, he withdrew from their sight, and was carried up to heaven.
They worshipped him and went back to Jerusalem full of joy, and they were continually in the Temple praising God”
This account of the Ascension is so amazing! Initially it seemed that the apostles had little understanding of Jesus and his mission, yet, on this occasion despite their doubts they trusted Jesus, and proceeded to carry out his instructions without any further questioning!
They were filled with new courage, and followed all that Jesus said quite calmly, a complete transfiguration! It was as if they were injected with great courage, confidence and faith.
Through Baptism we have received the same call as the apostles. We have been instructed with the same mission, “You will be my witnesses, go forth and proclaim the gospel” Like the apostles we are to proclaim the gospel with great joy! Our proclamation cannot be just words, but a total commitment of all that we are. “What you are shouts so loudly I cannot hear what you say!”
