Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Isaiah 55:10-11 Psalm 65:10, 11, 12-13, 14
Romans 8:18-23    Matthew 13:1-23

I like to sit in silence a few times a day, if possible, and often as I begin, I read the Responsorial Psalm from the daily readings, this gives an indication as to the theme of the readings. Today’s response is no exception “the seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest”.

The challenge is how to yield a fruitful harvest?

The Prophet Isaiah, gives us a pointer, saying, “just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till, they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to one who sows and bread to one who eats.” In other words, we are provided with everything we need, rain, snow, water, sun, we are even given the seeds to sow that provide us with bread for our sustenance.

To yield a fruitful harvest, we sit with a certain receptivity and with an open heart to allow the Word to penetrate our being.

Again, Isaiah says, “so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; my word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.” “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”

(Psalm 119). Here we get practical guidance for daily life, showing us just enough light for the next step while giving us clarity for the overall journey. This is how the word achieves its end, little by little.

For our part we sit with the Word daily- and believe me, it never gets stale or boring. We can begin with having faith in the power of God’s word. God’s word is an instrument by which God reaches us. This does not happen automatically but grows in a soil of faith and prayer.

Lectio Divina, is an ancient method of receptivity of the Word, found in the Rule of St. Benedict from the Fourth Century, it is tried and true.

The method has four steps Read, Reflect, Respond and Rest with your chosen passage of Scripture, listening with the “ear of the heart” to ensure a receptive soil. And receptivity leads to action.

There are many other ways to ensure a receptive soil, the Rosary, opens us to the Mysteries of Christ’s life and to action on behalf of others; visiting and caring for the house bound, or my friend, who accompanies her husband with dementia while praying the rosary. The tilling of the soil produces nurturing, kindness, and joy.

The Gospel from Matthew refers to the good soil and the Sower of the seed who is Christ. The fact that it only produces one a hundred- fold, one sixty, and one thirty, is not due to the Sower but to you the soil.

This summer try to find time to discover the beauty of the natural world and in particular the wonder of the soil that blossoms with such abundance this July. Take time silently to weave together the life of nature and the inner life of the soul then “the seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest” for your life and will make a difference in your relationships with your family and friends and the wider community.

Décimo quinto Domingo do Tempo Comum:

Isaías 55, 10-11 Salmo 65, 10, 11, 12-13, 14
Romanos 8, 18-23 Mateus 13, 1-23

E a receptividade conduz à ação.
