Fifth Sunday of Easter
18th May 2025
First reading: Acts 14:21-27
Second reading: Apocalypse 21:1-5
Gospel: John 13:31-33,34-35
The readings for this Sunday, the 5th Sunday of Easter, are clear in announcing God’s active love among us. Once we allow God, who sustains us, to be living in us and be open to the gift of one another, much can be achieved. In God’s grace many doors can be opened. In the extract from the Book of the Apocalypse we read of a new city in which God lives among us and the whole of creation is made new. In the first reading Paul and Barnabas are recorded as having given an account to the church assembled of all that God had done for them. Their account of being able to do all that they did because God was with them supports what the late Pope Francis referred to as the ‘myth of self-sufficiency’.
Much can be done by God who sustains us and who lives among us, if we are willing. It is hope that allows us to trust in God’s strength to achieve a good that seems impossible to do.
The Gospel passage begins with a scene of the disciples gathered at table. Judas had just left and Jesus turns to his disciples to speak to them. He tells his disciples that he has been glorified and all that is about to take place, this great act of love, will be transformed into something more splendid. Jesus then gives them a commandment ‘to love one another’. This love for one another will be a witness for others and through that love others will experience God alive.
In hearing Jesus’ commandment to live in the spirit of love, what do I need to ask from Jesus. What are my blind spots that block a willingness to receive this love and so prevent God’s love flowing through me and living in me, and prevent me from going out to others so as to live in hope and bring about good. Help me, O God, to free myself of any barrier to love so that I may glorify you by my life, and God’s love for all of creation will be transformed in us and through us, creating something quite splendid, adding to the newness of life.
May we live in love of one another and daily go in peace glorifying God by our lives.
