4th Sunday of the Church’s Year / The feast of St Brigid
Two celebrations combine today: It is both the 4th Sunday of the Church’s Year and is also the feast of St Brigid, Patroness of Ireland.
Th gospel reading centres on the Beatitudes taught by Jesus himself. (Mt 5: 1-12)
The values that they portray are breathtaking. As his followers, Jesus invites us to live simply, leaving space for God in our lives and to be gentle, kind and merciful in relating to other people. He challenges us to be peace-makers, even to the point of giving our lives for others.
We see many people nowadays who live out these Beatitudes; for example, they work for justice in war-torn parts of the world; they feed the hungry or minister to the sick. At risk to their own lives, they challenge injustice.
In our church and in our world today we need such people. Scammers abound; so does falsehood. Those who stand up for what is right, or who speak truth to power need our support.
However, when Jesus was preaching the Beatitudes, he was sitting on the hillside talking to ordinary people like you and me. His message invites each of us to be caring people, pure of heart, peacemakers, merciful, wherever we are. For most of us that can begin in our own homes with family and neighbours. Thankfully, most of us are blessed to know such persons.
Some of those we look up to have gone before us, whether in the recent past or many centuries ago. St Brigid, Patroness of Ireland, is one such person. In her lifetime Brigid certainly lived out the Beatitudes. It is remarkable that, although she lived in the 6th century, her influence lasts to this day.
