Sixth Sunday of Easter

In the first reading from St Peter’s letter on this Sixth Sunday after Easter, we encounter Philip in a Samaritan town. The people welcomed him with great joy because of the message he was preaching. Philip also cast out demons and healed the sick. The people were filled with joy. Philip was not alone: Peter and John were with him. They laid their hands on the people, and everyone received the Holy Spirit for the first time. Just imagine their joy!

Psalm 65:1–7, 16–20 invites all creation to praise God, for the Spirit dwells there. In the second verse, the community, the people of God, wished to praise and give thanks to God for all that He had done for them. This second part invites us to praise and bless God, giving thanks for the favours received, clearly recognising that God always hears our prayers.

In the second reading: (First Letter of Saint Peter, 3:15–18): Saint Peter the Apostle invites us to glorify Christ in our hearts, upholding him with a clear conscience and with respect and kindness. He tells us that it is always better to do good and suffer for it than to do evil.

Gospel: (John 14:15–21):

How important it is for each of us to understand that, in this Gospel, Jesus tells us that he will not leave us as orphans and that he will send us the Spirit of truth. It seems to me that this is the gift we need most in our world today.

A common thread running through all these readings is the idea of allowing ourselves to be guided by Jesus’ promise to send his Holy Spirit. This promise is fulfilled from the Old Testament right through to the period following Jesus’ death and resurrection. The Spirit is granted to the apostles through tangible signs, which we can appreciate in our own lives. if we can listen in prayer and invite the Spirit into our lives; the whole of our lives —whether in prayer groups, in our workplaces, in our community life or within our families.

We need only to believe that the Spirit is already present in each one of us.

Do not leave us orphaned; fill us with your Spirit so that, like the disciples in today’s Gospel, we may be followers of Jesus in our daily lives.
