The Baptism of the Lord; 11th of January

Today’s Gospel reading focuses on the Baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan. The Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist features in all four Gospels. Today’s Gospel is from Mathew 3: 13-17. St. Mathew includes it at the start of Jesus ‘s public ministry.

From the previous section of the Gospel – Mathew 3:11 we know that John the Baptist was asking people to “Repent and prepare the way of the Lord”. His baptism was with water to cleanse and people declared the intention to reform their lives. There were a large number of people going to the river Jordan to be baptized by John.

Would I have gone along? I have to admit that I am a sheep rather than a leader, so it probably would have depended on whether friends or family members were going along. Also would I be prepared to commit to change what I needed to change in my life?

I would like to mention the first reading before returning to the Gospel. The first reading is from Isaiah, I think that it is uplifting and reassuring Isaiah 42: 6-7 ” I am the Lord, I have called you in Righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you, I have given you as a covenant to the People, a light to the Nations.”

We know very little about Jesus’s earlier adult life. We know that he was living in Nazareth. We can presume that St. Joseph had died by then and that Jesus, as the eldest son, was looking after the family carpentry business.

The Gospel begins at Mathew 3: 13-15 ” Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him saying “I need to be baptized by you, and do You come to me? ” But Jesus answered him

” Let it be so now, for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness”. I think that this is a wonderful, significant exchange between Jesus and John the Baptist. ” Let it be so now” is a Gentle way of explaining that things need to be this way to fulfill God’s plan.

The word “Righteousness ” appears twice in today’s readings, first in the reading from Isaiah 42 and then in the Gospel. It is not a word that we hear that often today. One explanation of what it means is doing what is right in the sight of God. This is a message for us today too as we live our daily lives ..being guided by the Holy Spirit and trying to do what God would like us to do.

The last section of the Gospel explains what happened as Jesus was baptized. Matthew 3: 16-17..”Just as Jesus came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened for him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said ” This is my son the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased “. John the Baptist knew that the person on whom he saw the Spirit descend and remain, was the one who would baptise with the Holy Spirit…and that Jesus was indeed the chosen one of God .Occasionally we can see shafts of light coming through the clouds and reaching down towards the horizon. Whenever I see this I am reminded of God’s presence in our world . I am also reminded of today’s Gospel and the wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit.
