The Fourth Sunday of Lent

This Sunday’s Gospel invites us to think about the man born blind from the perspective of the need to want to escape from darkness, to escape from the chaos that we experience as humanity throughout the world, that we experience in a reality that confuses and discourages us. Our humanity is fragile and blind in the face of the different events that are happening throughout the world, such as wars, hunger, floods, forest fires, etc. Our human life is being violated in terms of human rights, justice, and peace when we do not take care of the common home we inhabit, when we pass by those who need only presence, listening, a hug, a smile, companionship, love, mercy, etc.
As people, we need to allow ourselves to be touched by JESUS, to feel that he enlightens us with his presence, that he draws near and has compassion on the blindness that silences us, leaves us aside, isolated, enslaved, dependent, as the man born blind experienced feeling frustrated on the side of the road, abandoned by a society that does not see him, literally, does not see him, avoids him so as not to be contaminated by the sin that perhaps his parents caused, or he himself at birth, etc.; so we find ourselves with two types of blindness: the physical blindness of the man born blind and that of a society with a blind heart…
I would like to hold on to the experience of feeling the blessed light of Jesus’ presence in my own blindness that prevents me from being myself, when I feel overwhelmed by my inner conflicts that are not helpful, when my pride and lack of listening to the people around me who appreciate me get the better of me, when the blindness of my lack of humility in the face of “I can, I can do it alone, and no, it’s not like that, it’s not easy to see yourself in the mirror of blindness, but many times the light of Jesus’ presence in a broken heart illuminates and grows that light if I give it space, time, and above all if I embrace my own vulnerability.
The blind man began to see with his eyes, but also with his heart, because he discovered that Jesus is the light of life in our humanity. He touches the mud on our eyes day by day with the love of a pure and merciful heart, with a heart that sympathises, and as the psalmist sings, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” That is my daily prayer when I wake up and when I go to bed.
The challenge as a Dominican family is to bear witness to the light of Jesus in our lives and to give it to others with a heart filled with that light every day, the light of Jesus, Jesus the light of life.
I invite you to read these verses from a well-known song, “Bendita la luz” (Blessed is the Light), by Maná (a Mexican band):
Blessed is the place and the reason for being there,
Blessed the coincidence and time which brought us here
Blessed is your presence
Blessed is God for meeting us on the journey
and for taking away this loneliness from my destiny…
Blessed is the light,
Blessed is the light of your gaze.
Blessed is the light of your gaze; that gaze which reaches the depths of my soul…
Blessed are the eyes that avoided me, feigned disdain, ignored me, and now suddenly hold my gaze…
Divine glory of this blessing and my good fortune of finding you right here, at the center of my the road I travel.
Glory to heaven for finding you now, take away my loneliness and unite my destiny with yours.
