Heritage Day is a public holiday in South Africa celebrated every year on the 24th September. It is a day when South Africans celebrate their diverse cultural traditions, languages, beliefs, and history as part of the “Rainbow Nation”. Today in Rosary House, Sr Columbia Fernandez OP decided to mark the occasion by dressing up in a traditional Xhosa outfit. She was given a new name by one of the carers which is Zusakhe and which means “Build the nation”, or “Build the family”, “Nurture us, build us”. Meaning and Symbolism Community and Growth: As a personal name, it represents someone who brings people together, encourages others, and helps their community or family grow and heal. It was a beautiful day and we hope to celebrate the day with a traditional South African Braai soon. (Sr Columbia Fernandez OP – 24th September 2026)
