An Tairseach Organic Farm and Ecology Centre

Founded by the Dominican Sisters in Wicklow Town in the mid 1990’s, in response to the climate change crisis, An Tairseach was established to recognise and embrace care of the earth. At An Tairseach Organic Farm & Ecology Centre, the Dominican Sisters practice sustainable living, environmental education, and earth spirituality. As ecological issues become increasingly important, An Tairseach Organic Farm & Ecology Centre plays an important role in educating others on why care of the earth, and holistic and sustainable living, is connected to spirituality.

An Tairseach houses an Ecology Centre which hosts one day and weekend courses on a variety of subjects from Cosmology and the Universe Story, to growing organic food.  We also run a bi annual 10 week residential Sabbatical programme, to explore spirituality in the context of an evolving universe, an endangered earth, in the Christian tradition.  The Ecology Centre is located in a refurbished former school building on school grounds, surrounded by vegetable gardens and other farm related activities. It has 18 single bedrooms where students from at home and abroad come for short and long term courses related to ecology and sustainable living as well as the spirituality which underpins them.

On the 70 acre working organic Farm, our aim is to produce health giving organic vegetables, pork and beef which we sell through our Farm Shop and at Farm Markets. Part of the 70-acre Farm is set aside for wildlife where over 10,000 trees have been planted, hedgerows restored and other habitats developed so that small mammals, birds, bees and other insects can thrive. In this way we believe we are contributing to the environmental health of our planet as well as creating a place of beauty where people can enjoy the benefits of the natural world in a stunning setting overlooking Wicklow Bay. The Farm is also used as an educational facility where children and adults can study the overall natural world and learn to love and value our beautiful planet. Most of our employees were hired through the Community Services Programme (Pobal) scheme, and through this, we provide a much needed service to the community in assisting people back into full and part time employment. Our Farm Shop is open Tuesdays to Saturdays throughout the year.

“The mission of An Tairseach is to raise awareness of the place of the human as part of the web of life, through practice and education.”

Ecological Connection to Spirituality

The Dominican Sisters practice sustainable living, environmental education, and Earth spirituality in their An Tairseach Ecology Centre.  Located on 70 acres of land, near Wicklow Gaol in Wicklow town, the Sisters established An Tairseach to recognise and embrace Care of the Earth as an important area of their preaching.  As ecological issues become increasingly important, the Sisters play an important role in educating others on why care of the earth and holistic and sustainable living is connected to spirituality.

An Tairseach houses the ecology and spirituality centre which hosts one day retreat and weekend courses on subject matter from cosmology and the Universe to growing organic food.  The Sisters also run a bi annual 10 week residential programme, to explore spirituality in the context of an evolving universe.
