On St Dominic’s Day, 8th August 2026, 26 enthusiastic spirit-filled Sisters and guests filled the Chapel in Rosary House for a celebration Mass for the Solemnity of St Dominic. Fr Roger Hickey, a retired Priest from the Archdiocese of Cape Town came to celebrate Mass with us and had a place at our table at lunch. We remembered with love at Mass, Sr Mary Hunt OP, RIP, who would have been celebrating her Diamond Jubilee with us on St Dominic’s Solemnity. She is without a doubt smiling down fron Heaven. Her sister was visiting from Ireland for a short visit and she celebrated St Dominic’s Solemnity Mass with us and also Sr Mary’s Diamond Jubilee. May Mary’s dear soul rest in God’s eternal peace.
The liturgy prepared by Sr Columbia OP was prayerful, and festive to mark the occasion. Our dining room for lunch was transformed into an exquisite banquet hall with the expertise of Deidre Beck, our Rosary House Manager and her team. Lunch prepared by our kitchen staff, was beautifully presented and very delicious making us come back for more. It felt like “Christmas in August”. We thank God for our Father St Dominic, the beauty of our Dominican Vocation, Dominican hospitality, and for a glorious, joyful day.

In case you missed it, at the end of June, RTE featured the return to nature of church grounds in Co Clare. Co Clare was the pilot project for an ever-growing biodiversity initiative that came about after the Irish Bishops Conference agreed that parishes would return 30% of church grounds to nature by 2030. Have you heard of Earth Overshoot Day? This is the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources in a given year exceeds what our planet can regenerate in that year. It starts by measuring the ecological footprint of the whole of the planet’s population, and averaging it out. Globally, 30th July is the date that we will mark Earth Overshoot Day, determined by calculating the number of days of that year that Earth’s biocapacity can provide for humanity’s ecological footprint. The remainder of the year corresponds to global overshoot. This graphic shows when each country in the world hits their own national overshoot – Ireland’s was on 14th April. In the grounds of the Dominican Convent on the Falls Road in Belfast, we estimate that around 40% of the grounds have been given over to wildflower meadows and to nature. Sr Susie O’Rawe has been overseeing the transformation, and sees evidence of increased numbers of bees, insects and birds, as can be seen in these photos.
